About Kaiun Bridge

The most iconic bridge in Morioka is not only a vital transportation route but also a stunning scenic spot.

Details

Kaiun Bridge is located very close to JR Morioka Station. It spans the Kitakami River, which flows through Morioka City, serving an important function in connecting Morioka Station with the city center. The first generation of the bridge was built in the 23rd year of the Meiji era (1890), and the current Kaiun Bridge is the third generation, constructed in the 28th year of the Showa era (1953). After the deep green and white colors of the previous two generations, the current bridge is painted in a moonlight white. Kaiun Bridge is famous as a scenic spot, offering views of Iwate Mountain, the highest peak in the prefecture at an elevation of 2,038 meters. One of the highlights is the winter scenery of Morioka, featuring the Kitakami River and Iwate Mountain adorned with white snow. The seasonal flowers blooming in the flowerbeds by the river also attract the attention of visiting tourists. Additionally, there is a limited-time lighting event at night, where the colors change every 3 to 5 minutes, creating various combinations of light that envelop Kaiun Bridge in a dreamlike atmosphere, distinct from the daytime, making it breathtakingly beautiful. The simple arch-truss bridge harmonizes well with the seasonal landscapes, adding to its charm. Kaiun Bridge is also known by the nickname "Nido Kuraku Bridge." This name comes from the experience of newcomers who, upon first moving to Morioka, lamented while crossing the bridge, saying, "I've come to such a distant place." However, after feeling the warmth of the local people and the community, when they leave Morioka years later, they cross the bridge in tears again, saying, "I don't want to leave," which is how the bridge got its name.
