🍜 Kamonji Lodge

📝 Introduction

Enjoy famous delicacies in the ancient mountain lodge built by legendary figures in Kamikochi.

📖 Details

Kamonji Lodge was built in Meiji 13 (1880) by Kamonji Kamijo, who served as a guide for Walter Weston, known as the father of modern Japanese mountaineering. Today, the fifth generation of Kamijo, Mizuho, carries on this history and tradition, welcoming travelers to this resting place in the Northern Alps mountain base of "Kamikochi" for accommodation and dining. The irori (traditional sunken hearth) built in the late Taisho era is a symbol of Kamonji Lodge and is registered as a national tangible cultural asset. The salt-grilled iwana (rock trout) roasted over the irori is the most representative signature dish. The iwana is caught fresh from the live fish pond in the river in front of the lodge after ordering, then skewered with bamboo sticks and carefully grilled over the firewood in the irori, resulting in an exquisite texture. The entire iwana can be enjoyed from head to tail, allowing for a full appreciation of the ingredient's deliciousness. Additionally, the Kamonji soba noodles paired with sweet simmered iwana and the bone sake poured over iwana that has been smoked for three days in the irori are also popular dishes. Enjoy a moment of relaxation and leisure in this historic mountain lodge.

⭐ Highlights

Built during the Meiji era, it is a famous recreational spot in Kamikōchi. The irori (囲炉裏) inside symbolizes the hut and has been designated as a nationally registered tangible cultural asset. Grilled salt-baked iwana (岩魚) from the river, cooked over the irori's firewood, is a must-try delicacy.
