Kembon Mountain, with an elevation of 1,199 meters, is one of the hundred famous mountains in Gunma. The clear and beautiful Kiryu River flowing from the mountain has nurtured this picturesque nature over the long years. The forest area along the Kiryu River is known as "Kiryu River Source Forest" and has been selected as one of the "Top 100 Forest Bathing Spots in Japan" and "Top 100 Water Source Forests in Japan." No matter when you visit, you can enjoy scenery filled with the unique charm of the season. Especially in summer, the refreshing new greens and in autumn, the maple leaves along the stream provide a feast for the eyes. The Kiryu River Source Forest is also the best place for hiking and enjoying forest bathing. Those confident in their stamina can try hiking from Umeda Lake to the upstream Ishikamo Tenmangu Shrine. This hiking route, following Prefectural Road 337, is about 7 kilometers long and takes approximately an hour and a half. Along the hike, you can admire various attractions, including the important cultural property of Kiryu City, "Ishikamo's Dōsojin," while gradually entering deeper into the mountains. When you reach the narrow path where cars cannot pass, you will see Ishikamo Tenmangu Shrine. According to legend, the shrine dedicated to the warlord Fujiu Kii, who protects this land, was once submerged by a flood. Later, villagers found the shrine and rebuilt the current shrine at this location. After passing through the torii gate into the shrine grounds, there is a steep stone staircase. At the end of the staircase stands an ancient shrine filled with a mysterious atmosphere and a stone hall. From the various offerings, it is evident that this place is still revered by the local people today. Visiting this rural shrine that coexists with nature allows you to enjoy the stunning natural scenery, colored by the changing seasons.
