Details

Koisikawa Botanical Garden is an affiliated facility of the University of Tokyo, aimed at botanical research and education. Its official name is "Tokyo University Graduate School of Science Botanical Garden." It originated as the "Koisikawa Medicinal Herb Garden," established over 300 years ago during the Edo period when the shogunate built it for cultivating medicinal herbs. After the establishment of the University of Tokyo in 1877, it was converted into an affiliated botanical garden and opened to the public. It is also well-known as the research base of the protagonist, Makino Tomitaro, in the 2023 NHK morning drama "Ranman." Covering an area of 160,000 square meters, the garden showcases a variety of 3,000 plant species, including camellias, azaleas, cherry blossoms, ginkgo trees, and maple trees, displaying the changing beauty of the four seasons. The greenhouse contains 1,100 species of tropical and subtropical plants. Among its many highlights are the "Newton's Apple Tree" and "Mendel's Grapes," making it a place worth exploring leisurely for an entire day. Koisikawa Botanical Garden was designated as a National Scenic Spot and Historic Site in 2012.
