About Meguro Parasitological Museum

A rare museum in the world dedicated to the theme of parasites.

Details

This museum specializes in the study of parasites, and there is no other similar museum in the world. It was established by Dr. Ryo Kumaguchi to research parasites and promote education and awareness about parasite prevention. The first and second floors of the building serve as exhibition halls, showcasing approximately 300 specimens preserved in liquid along with related information. In addition to the permanent exhibits, various special exhibitions are frequently held to introduce the fascinating and interesting aspects of parasites. The theme of the first-floor exhibition hall is "Diversity of Parasites." It begins with an explanation of what "parasitism" is, using specimens of human and fish parasites for illustration. The theme of the second floor is "Parasites Related to Humans," which provides an in-depth introduction to the ecology of parasites that affect the human body. The most striking display is an 8.8-meter-long tapeworm, said to have come from a patient who consumed fish containing parasitic larvae. The museum also features a gift shop, offering original parasite-themed T-shirts and lanyards containing parasites, which can only be purchased here.
