🗺️ Miho no Matsubara

📝 Introduction

The number one scenic spot in Japan, deeply loved by scholars and artists.

📖 Details

The approximately 5-kilometer coastline of Sanbō Matsubara, with its 30,000 thriving pine trees, has long been a scenic spot attracting people from all walks of life. It is listed as one of Japan's "New Three Views" and "Three Great Pine Groves," and was registered as a component asset of the Mount Fuji World Cultural Heritage in 2013, drawing significant attention from both domestic and international travelers. Standing in a corner of the pine grove is the Hagiwara Pine, famous for being the setting of the traditional performing arts Noh play "Hagiwara Legend." It stands about 15 meters tall, with branches extending up to 25 meters, and a trunk circumference of 3.5 meters, making it particularly massive compared to other pines. One of the highlights worth seeing is the view of the white waves crashing against the shore, the pine forest, and Mount Fuji. Walking from the vicinity of the Hagiwara Pine to the beach, heading south towards the breakwater area, allows you to take in this stunning scenery. The images captured by the ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige during the Edo period, along with many paintings and waka poems that describe this view, will surely be deeply etched in your memory. Near the Hagiwara Pine, you can find the Shizuoka City Sanbō Matsubara Cultural Creation Center "Sanbō Lighthouse," where you can learn about the history and culture of Sanbō Matsubara. It provides information on photo spots, as well as coin-operated lockers and a winter-only foot bath, serving as a great rest area to stop by.
