Details
Myōkō-in is a temple of the Shingon sect, said to have been founded by Prince Shinjū in 859. It was once a temple deeply revered by the rulers of the time. According to historical records, the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu donated several lands to the temple. There is a beautiful bamboo grove on the temple grounds, and to the north of the temple, there is an important historical Buddhist hall dedicated to Kōbō Daishi. The temple also preserves a "kei," a type of instrument struck during sutra recitation, from the Nanboku-chō period of Japan.
