Details

Ogura Sanso is a long-established rice cracker specialty store located in Nagaokakyo City, Kyoto Prefecture, offering a variety of products inspired by "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu" and the cultural songs of the Heian period. One of the products inspired by Ogura Hyakunin Isshu is "Karuta Hyakunin Isshu." The packaging for the 10 flavors of puffed rice and senbei is designed with the 100 poems of Waka, each individually packaged. In addition to the shrimp-flavored "Ebi Sakura," the spicy "Kyoto Shichimi" with several spices, and the "Charred Cheese" made with two types of cheese, there are also unique flavors such as "Salad," "Nori Roll," "Maple Leaf," "Purple Sweet Potato," "Sugar," "Caramel Almond," and "Curry." The varying shapes depending on the flavor are also noteworthy. The front of the individual packaging features the next line of a poem from Hyakunin Isshu, while the back prints the entire Waka poem, allowing you to enjoy the snack while reciting the Hyakunin Isshu. The vivid colors of the packaging and the elegant content make it a popular choice for gifts. *Ogura Hyakunin Isshu is a collection of Waka poetry compiled in the early Kamakura period (first half of the 13th century). It features one poem each from 100 outstanding Waka poets from the Asuka period to the Kamakura period, thus commonly referred to as "Hyakunin Isshu." Although it was initially compiled in the form of a poetry collection, it has long been widely used as a card game, and to this day, "competitive karuta" tournaments remain popular.
