About Nanzen-ji Shunsei
Standing in front of Nanzen-ji Temple, the old restaurant specializing in yudofu (tofu hot pot) exudes a rich atmosphere.
Details
The old shop standing on the approach to Nanzen-ji Temple conveys the deeply rooted culture of yudofu (tofu hot pot) and traditional Kyoto culture through its beloved yudofu, cherished by the local community since ancient times. Here, you can leisurely enjoy the famous yudofu and yuba (tofu skin) while admiring the seasonal beauty of the 1,200-tsubo strolling garden.
Within the garden, "Junsei Shoin" was built by the Rangaku physician Shingu Ryotei during the Edo period as a place for medical scholarship, and it is now designated as a nationally registered tangible cultural asset. This elegant building, once used as a cultural salon by feudal lords and literati, is now also utilized as a dining area for small groups. The pure Japanese-style "Ryotei Kaku" located at the back has table seating and can accommodate larger dining parties.
The menu offers easy-to-enjoy set meals and kaiseki (traditional multi-course meal) using seasonal ingredients. The "Hana Set" priced at 3,630 yen allows you to choose a main dish from yudofu made with domestically produced soybeans or freshly caught yuba, accompanied by stewed vegetables and dengaku, ensuring a satisfying experience. Additionally, you can also enjoy a luxurious kaiseki (lunch starting from 7,150 yen and dinner from 7,700 yen) that features yudofu or freshly caught yuba.
Highlights
The signature menu "Tofu Hot Pot Seasonal Dishes" (lunch 7,150 yen, dinner 7,700 yen) is available for reservation, while the set menu cannot be reserved. You can enjoy the famous tofu hot pot and tofu skin while admiring the charming garden. The garden is illuminated at night, creating a completely different atmosphere. It is about a 3-minute walk to Nanzen-ji Temple and Suirakuen, and only an 8-minute walk to Eikando, which is famous for its autumn leaves.
