📖 Details
Aokigahara Forest is a famous scenic area located at the foot of Mount Fuji. The Narusawa Ice Cave is situated at the entrance on the eastern side of Aokigahara Forest. As one of the well-known attractions of the Fuji Five Lakes, it attracts many visitors throughout the year. This is a lava cave that is 153 meters long, believed to have been formed in 864 AD by lava flowing from the side volcano of Mount Fuji, known as "Nagao-yama."
The average temperature inside the cave drops to 3 degrees Celsius, and it is covered in ice and snow year-round, which is how it got its name. The highlight of the cave is the ice columns formed by water droplets seeping from the ceiling and freezing. April is the best time to visit, as you can see massive ice columns approximately 50 centimeters in diameter and about 3 meters tall. Additionally, at the deepest part of the cave, there is a deep hole known as "Jigoku Ana" (Hell Cave), which is said to extend all the way to Enoshima in Kanagawa Prefecture.
