About Okutama Lake
With beautiful natural scenery across four seasons, it is a famous attraction in 奥多摩 (Okutama).
Details
The artificial lake formed by the damming of the Tama River at the 小河內水庫 (Kōguchi Reservoir), completed in 1957 (Showa 32), is officially named the "Kōguchi Reservoir." With a total storage capacity of approximately 180 million tons, it supplies 20% of Tokyo's water, making it the largest water supply reservoir in Japan and a crucial water source for Tokyo.
The area retains a surprisingly rich natural environment located within Tokyo, and the entire region is designated as part of the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park. The seasonal natural scenery varies greatly, featuring cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves, and winter snow, all beautifully intertwined with the calm surface of the lake.
Driving along the national road that extends along the northern shore of the lake is very pleasant and comfortable, and it is recommended to set aside some time to enjoy a leisurely walk. On the lake, there is a pedestrian-only floating bridge called the "Gasoline Barrel Bridge," constructed from square box-shaped resin, which allows visitors to closely admire the lake's surface reflecting the natural scenery like a mirror while enjoying the fun of walking on water.
Additionally, the "Okutama Water and Green Friendship Hall" features exhibits and videos introducing the nature, history, folklore, and detailed information about the reservoir. A must-try dish at the restaurant inside is the "Kōguchi Reservoir Curry," modeled after the Gasoline Barrel Bridge, with a limited availability of 20 servings per day.
