About Old Navy Command Bunker
The old naval command bunker, telling of the horrors of war and praying for peace.
Details
In the final year of the Pacific War, Showa 19 (1944), a command base was constructed underground by a naval construction unit of three thousand personnel. In Showa 20 (1945), during the Battle of Okinawa, a naval unit surrounded by a large number of American troops on June 13 of the same year heroically sacrificed themselves in the naval command bunker. Today, it has been transformed into the "Prefectural Navy Bunker Park," which conveys a message of peace, featuring a 450-meter-long tunnel and 300 meters of open areas for public viewing.
Visitors can walk down the 105-step staircase from the visitor center into the bunker, where multiple passages allow access to areas preserved in their original state, such as the commander's room, staff room, and medical room. The visitor center's display showcases numerous artifacts discovered within the bunker, including military uniforms, firearms, and letters written by the families of the deceased to their loved ones, all telling the harrowing tales of war and the importance of peace.
Nearby, in addition to the "Memorial Tower" and "Peace Tree," there is an observation deck that offers a panoramic view of Naha City and the East China Sea. The park features walking paths and playground equipment, making it a beloved recreational spot for both adults and children, attracting many tourists and residents of Okinawa.
