About Onuma Bird Observation Center
A spot where you can observe the seasonal wild birds of Lake Biwa.
Details
The Ōnuma Bird Observation Center is located by Lake Ōnuma in Wakkanai City, the northernmost city in Japan, Hokkaido. Ōnuma serves as a stopover for swans migrating to their wintering grounds in the fall and a resting place for those returning to Siberia in the spring, allowing visitors to observe the swans that stop at Ōnuma. The sight of thousands of swans scattered across the lake is truly spectacular, with as many as 7,000 swans present in a single day.
The center thoughtfully provides binoculars and monoculars for free rental, so even those who come empty-handed can closely observe the ecology of water birds. Other species such as herons, white-fronted geese, and bean geese can also be seen. In winter, there is a chance to spot the natural monuments, the white-tailed eagle and the Steller's sea eagle.
Inside the center, there are observation rooms, rest areas, and exhibition zones where visitors can leisurely enjoy nature. Additionally, there are canoeing experiences, tent saunas, and winter snow activities available. If interested, it's advisable to check the official website before heading out.
