On March 11, 2011, an elementary school was struck by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. 74 children and 10 staff members lost their precious lives. Ishinomaki City has preserved the school buildings that were destroyed by the tsunami as an earthquake site, where regular lectures by survivors are held. Together with the Okawa Disaster Heritage Museum, which displays photos and artifacts from before and after the earthquake, it opened for public viewing in July 2021.
