About Philosophy Hall Park

A park characterized by cultivating the spirit and being close to nature.

Details

Philosopher's Park, located in Nakano, Tokyo, was established in 1904 (Meiji 37) by Inoue Enryo, the founder of Toyo University and a philosopher. This park, designed to cultivate the spirit, features several buildings and facilities that visually express the world of philosophy. Within the park, there are many structures built during the Meiji period. The "Shiseido" hall enshrines Confucius, Shakyamuni, Socrates, and Kant, four philosophers from both ancient and modern times who had a profound influence on Inoue Enryo. There is also the "Rokushin-dai," which honors the six sages of the East, and the "Mugenzo," which displays Inoue Enryo's collection. The "Garden of Philosophy" is a highlight of the park, featuring statues of world-class religious figures and philosophers arranged in concentric circles, as if they are conversing with one another. Additionally, bridges, ponds, and slopes are all named after philosophical concepts, showcasing creativity. This lush green park was designated a national scenic spot in 2020. Many people, including local residents, come here to walk and jog. Strolling leisurely through the park's varied landscapes allows visitors to enjoy seasonal flowers and wild birds. Nakano Avenue is one of Tokyo's famous attractions, and the cherry blossoms that bloom in spring are particularly worth seeing. The expansive park also includes a baseball field, tennis courts, and an archery range.
