About Sakhalin Indigenous People's Memorial Monument - Gate of Ice and Snow
The symbol of Wakkanai Park, a stone monument filled with historical traces.
Details
The memorial monument built within "Wakkanai Park" commemorates those who passed away in Sakhalin (formerly Japanese territory) years ago. This place was once an important hub connecting Sakhalin and Japan, with many people traveling back and forth.
The memorial is a work by world-class sculptor Shin Hongo from Sapporo, consisting of three elements: the Gate of Nostalgia, a statue of a woman, and a spirit stone. The statue of the woman represents the strong resilience of people who survived in the freezing cold and rose again from the despair of defeat. On the other side of the gate, the distant silhouette of Sakhalin Island can be faintly seen, conveying the feelings of longing for one's hometown.
The park also features other monuments, including the "Monument of Nine Young Girls," which can be visited to gain a deeper understanding of this history. Since its completion in March 1963, Wakkanai City has held an annual memorial service called the "Ice and Snow Gate - Peace Prayer Ceremony for the Monument of Nine Young Girls" every August, organized by individuals related to Sakhalin.
Additionally, from Wakkanai Park, one can enjoy the beautiful night view that was registered as a "Japan Night View Heritage" in 2018. After nightfall, the "Ice and Snow Gate" is illuminated, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that is different from the daytime.
