About Sendai City Jomon Forest Plaza
Learning about the lifestyle of the Jomon period through observation and experience.
Details
Sendai City Jomon Forest Plaza is a space built to preserve and utilize the Jomon period village discovered at the Yamada Kamino-dai ruins. The Yamada Kamino-dai ruins are a village from the late Jomon period, over 4,000 years ago, where approximately 38 pit dwellings and around 320 storage pits have been found.
In the outdoor exhibition area, there are three restored pit dwellings, storage pits for tree fruits, and traps for capturing animals, allowing visitors to understand the structure of the village. The plaza area is planted with chestnuts, Japanese zelkova, and Japanese seven-leaf trees, recreating the forest landscape of that time. There are also Jomon fields and sample racks of climbing plants, which help people understand the use of plants during the Jomon period.
The facilities display pottery and stone tools excavated from the Yamada Kamino-dai ruins. Various experiential activities are also held (please check the official website for details such as dates). Activities like making magatama (comma-shaped beads), Jomon pottery, and fire-making experiences allow visitors to learn about the wisdom and skills of the Jomon people, receiving high praise from tourists.
