🗺️ Shōgunzuka Seiryu-den将軍塚青龍殿
About Shōgunzuka Seiryu-den
Kyoto's famous scenic spot, from the large stage you can overlook the city of Kyoto.
Details
Located within the grounds of the Tendai sect temple "Seiryuin," there is a historic site. At the summit of Mount Kaito, about 200 meters from downtown Kyoto, stands the Shogunzuka, which was built by Emperor Kanmu during the Heian period to pray for the peace of the capital after its relocation. It is named after the 2.7-meter tall statue of a general, made of clay and adorned with iron armor, buried underground.
Next to Shogunzuka stands the Gomado "Seiryu-den," which was built in 2014 and enshrines the National Treasure "Sei Fudō Myōō Ni Dōji-zō," created during the mid-Heian period. This structure was relocated and rebuilt from the wooden building "Budokuden" that originally stood in front of Kitano Tenmangū during the Taisho era. The National Treasure is housed in the inner hall, and visitors can view intricate replica paintings.
Along with the construction of Seiryu-den, a spacious main stage was also built. It offers a panoramic view of the Kyoto cityscape and includes a west viewing platform from which one can see the outskirts of Osaka. On the way to the west viewing platform, there is a stroll garden that incorporates a dry landscape style. The cherry blossoms in spring and the autumn leaves are particularly beautiful, and when illuminated at night, they create a charming scene in conjunction with the night view of Kyoto city.
