About Shinkyo Bridge (神橋)
A bridge that adds beautiful color to the sacred entrance of Nikko.
Details
The UNESCO World Heritage site "Shrines and Temples of Nikko," located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, consists of the Futarasan Shrine, Toshogu Shrine, Rinnoji Temple, and surrounding sites. The Shinkyo Bridge is a bridge that spans the entrance to this area, also known as "Yamasuga Bridge" and "Mihashi," and is one of the cultural properties that make up the World Heritage site. It is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
The Shinkyo Bridge has a mysterious legend. It is said that during the late Nara period, a monk named Shido, who opened up the sacred Mount Nikko, was blocked by the swift current of the Otagawa River while passing through this area. He burned offerings in prayer, seeking the protection of the deities. At that moment, the great king of dragons, Shinsandaiō, appeared and released two snakes, which had wild miscanthus growing on their backs. Ultimately, this became the bridge.
In the 13th year of the Kan'ei era (1624), it was rebuilt into its current beautiful form and was used for many years only during sacred rites or during visits from shogun worshippers. Starting from the 48th year of the Showa era (1973), it was opened for public use.
Additionally, the Shinkyo Bridge is ranked as one of Japan's three great unusual bridges, alongside Yamanashi Prefecture's "Saru Bridge" and Yamaguchi Prefecture's "Kintaikyo Bridge."

It is possible to pay a fee to cross the bridge, but visitors must return the same way, as they cannot walk to the other side.
