About Steam Bath Hot Springs

The oldest traditional steam hot spring in Hachimantai.

Details

Jōnoyu Onsen is located near the famous "Hachimantai ASPITE LINE," known for its breathtaking views, at an elevation of 1,100 meters in a secluded mountain area. The name Jōnoyu comes from the practice of using geothermal heat to cook hot water. Jōnoyu is also referred to as "Ondol," a traditional therapy that involves lying on warm, grass-covered floors. Today, there are many "Ondol" cabins available for use in the surrounding area. In addition to the indoor and outdoor baths connected to the inn, there are also rustic "wild outdoor baths" located a bit further away in the valleys. These wild outdoor baths are situated amidst the steam of the hot springs, with only changing booths providing privacy. It offers a true deep mountain hot spring experience. Although the wild outdoor baths are mixed-gender, women can wear yukata while bathing. The water quality is a simple, weakly acidic, cloudy spring. It is effective in alleviating neuralgia, skin diseases, gynecological issues, and more. The inn's shrine is dedicated to the deity Kanzeon, and it is also regarded as a place for those seeking to conceive.

Highlights

With a history of 400 years, it is the oldest hot spring in Hachimantai. It features a famous outdoor bath (mixed-gender). The meals are personally prepared by the owner, offering a healthy "steamed herbal medicine" style using ingredients from Hachimantai. Closed from November to April.
