Taisho Pond was formed in 1915 when lava from the eruption of Mount Yakedake blocked the Azusa River, creating a dammed lake. It is also one of the representative scenic spots of Kamikochi. Known for its enchanting beauty, Taisho Pond reflects the surrounding mountains of Kamikochi on its emerald green surface, while the submerged forest transforms into uniquely shaped dead branches, creating a landscape filled with a mysterious atmosphere. Additionally, there is a large beautiful birch forest surrounding the lake. Taisho Pond is located at an elevation of 1,490 meters, which is just the right environment for birch trees to thrive.
On clear days, the reflection of the Hotaka mountain range on Taisho Pond is undoubtedly beautiful, and the misty scenery of the pond on a rainy morning is quite dreamlike. At night, one can see a stunning starry sky very clearly from the lakeside. The trail from Taisho Pond to Kappa Bridge is a well-maintained path and is one of the most popular hiking routes in Kamikochi.
