Tomo no Ura has historically been a port city suitable for ships to anchor while waiting for changes in tides and wind direction, thriving as a "waiting tide port." It is also a scenic spot celebrated in the Manyoshu, and it has been designated as part of Japan's first national parks, the Setonaikai National Park. From the port, one can gaze upon the beautiful islands floating in the Seto Inland Sea, such as Zuisei Island and Benten Island.
