About WATARI-UM Art Museum (Watari-um Bijutsukan)
A private art museum focused on contemporary art, hosting a variety of rich exhibitions.
Details
The private art museum WATARI-UM (華達琉美術館) opened in September 1990. The building is the only design by Swiss architect Mario Botta in Japan, featuring a design that resembles a giant pair of wings and a façade with vertical stripes of granite and concrete, making it one of the most recognized landmarks in the area.
Today, it focuses on contemporary art from both domestic and international artists, hosting 3 to 4 exhibitions each year that cover various fields such as architecture, photography, film, and design. It is also dedicated to introducing young Japanese artists and holds various activities that allow visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the exhibitions. A significant feature is its efforts to bridge the gap between the public and art through lectures and seminars. Additionally, there is a shop within the museum that sells art-related books.
