About Wudao Observation Deck
Behind me is Sakurajima Volcano, which was once an island over a hundred years ago.
Details
"Sakurajima," as a symbol of Kagoshima, is an active volcano that still emits smoke today. For centuries, it has been an isolated island in the sea, and during the massive volcanic eruption in 1914, a large amount of lava was expelled, filling the strait between Sakurajima and Udo, making them connected land.
The "Udo Observatory" is situated on the plain formed by the lava fill. The ground is covered with rough, uneven black lava, making it hard to believe that this was once an ocean. Today, it is overgrown with grass and black pines, representing the long passage of time since the eruption over a hundred years ago.
The calm Kinko Bay, the lava plains stretching towards the sea, and the magnificent Sakurajima can be seen from any angle, showcasing an unparalleled majestic landscape. In front of you is not only the conical Sakurajima but also the tranquil Kinko Bay. Here, you can truly feel the astonishing energy of volcanic eruptions, making it a spot where you can closely experience the power of nature.
