About Yoshida Residence (Honjima)
The century-old residence built by the "Salt Saturated Carpenter" showcases the unique and ingenious designs of skilled craftsmen everywhere.
Details
The Yoshida Residence is located in the important traditional building preservation area of Kasashima, built by the famous "Shiohama carpenters," a term that refers to the renowned carpenters from the Shiohama Islands during the Edo to Meiji periods. Throughout the residence, one can see the ingenuity and exquisite craftsmanship of the artisans. For example, the tsuba (guard) embedded in the transom of one of the Japanese architectural styles; the corridor made from a single cedar tree, measuring up to 12 meters long and free of knots; everywhere, one can feel the unique beauty of traditional Japanese houses.
Particularly striking is the "dust-removing window," which can be adjusted to prevent dust accumulation. The meticulous design reflects how skilled craftsmen not only pursued aesthetic beauty but also paid attention to functionality. Additionally, the ceramic toilet and intricate designs reveal the once-thriving history of the Shiohama Islands.
In the garden, there is a beautifully shaped large pine tree. When the sliding door is opened, the view of the pine tree from the alcove resembles a painting, showcasing the stunning architectural concept.
Moreover, the alcove is adorned with a hanging scroll painting titled "Chicken" (a replica) by Ito Jakuchu, which is also well worth seeing. Ito Jakuchu was a painter from the Edo period who is quite famous even overseas.
