About Akita Prefectural Art Museum

One can appreciate the masterpiece "Akita Gyouji" by Tsuguharu Foujita, which depicts the folk festivals and daily life of Akita.

Details

The Akita Prefectural Art Museum is located near "Akita" Station and was opened in 2013 as part of the redeveloped "AREA NAKAICHI," which serves as a base for artistic and cultural exchange. The building, designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando, features a modern and stylish design, characterized by an extraordinary artistic space created through interwoven triangular patterns and a clear concrete interior. The museum primarily showcases works by Léonard Foujita (1886 – 1968), a collection amassed by the wealthy Akita businessman Masakichi Hirano. The centerpiece of the museum is the striking mural "Akita Events," which measures 3.65 meters in height and 20.50 meters in width. This mural depicts Akita's folk festivals and scenes of daily life, including the "Kanto Matsuri" and "Yukiya Matsuri." Additionally, visitors can view other works by Foujita, who was once praised as the "darling of the Paris art world," including notable pieces such as "Street Performer" and "After the Carnival." In addition to its permanent exhibitions, the museum hosts various themed special exhibitions. The café on the second floor offers excellent views of the pond garden and Chuo Park, allowing guests to enjoy a moment of relaxation in a lush, green atmosphere.
