🗺️ Ama Woman's Hut and Irori (sunken hearth)

📝 Introduction

You can only experience the culture of Ama (female divers) at the scenic spots in Shima and Toba, where there are many Ama!

📖 Details

The huts where the ama (海女) rest after diving for fish are a place where visitors can enjoy delicious fresh seafood while listening to the ama share their stories, providing an authentic experience of ama culture. There are two ama huts: "Maenohama" (前之濱), located on a wide beach, and "Ozegosan" (おぜごさん), situated at the end of a small path by the sea. Both offer grilled dishes at noon, including large clams, sea snails, scallops, and dried fish, culminating in a superb sea urchin rice dish. For an additional fee, visitors can also enjoy lobster and abalone. If you wish to interact more with the ama, it is recommended to choose the afternoon tea option, which includes snacks like grilled rice cakes and shellfish, allowing for plenty of conversation with the ama. The history of the ama is long, dating back 3,000 to 5,000 years, and it continues to this day, with mentions in ancient Japanese texts. They dive freely to catch abalone, sea snails, and sea urchins, as well as harvest seaweed sprouts, sea grapes, and other marine plants, wisely preventing overfishing and preserving resources for future generations. The unique customs and Shinto rituals of the ama are also quite captivating. Inside the hut, tools used by the ama in their daily work are on display, and any questions regarding ama culture can be asked here.
