🗺️ Aomori Prefectural Art Museum

📝 Introduction

A collection of large paintings by the world-renowned artist Marc Chagall.

📖 Details

The Aomori Prefectural Art Museum is located near the World Heritage Site "Sannai-Maruyama Site," just a 5-minute walk away. The museum's biggest highlight is the stage backdrop painted by Marc Chagall (1887-1985), one of the most representative painters of the 20th century, for the ballet "Aleko." "Aleko" is a ballet adapted from Pushkin's narrative poem "The Gypsies." In the museum's central hall, three of the four backdrops painted by Chagall are on display. The backdrops are 9 meters high and 15 meters wide, showcasing vibrant colors and brushstrokes that provide viewers with a strong impact and aesthetic enjoyment. Additionally, there is a special exhibition featuring another backdrop on long-term loan from the Philadelphia Museum of Art, allowing visitors to experience the entire four-act work (the exhibition is scheduled to run until March 2027). In addition to works by Chagall and other world-renowned artists, the museum also displays works by artists with deep connections to Aomori, such as Yoshitomo Nara and Tsuguharu Foujita. Among these, Nara's "Aomori Dog" is particularly popular. This 8.5-meter tall sculpture features a gentle, cute yet mysteriously expressive Aomori Dog that attracts countless visitors eager to see it. Merchandise related to the Aomori Dog is also in high demand and often sells out quickly.
