🗺️ Arashiyama Iwatayama Monkey Park

📝 Introduction

About 120 Japanese macaques inhabit the summit park in the wild. You can see various adorable appearances of the monkeys throughout the entire year.

📖 Details

At the Togetsukyo Bridge, 20 meters upstream from the Arashiyama tourist area, is the Iwatakiyama Munakata Shrine. The entrance to the Arashiyama Iwatayama Monkey Park is located within the shrine grounds. Currently, about 120 Japanese macaques live here in the wild, and visitors can see the adorable monkeys throughout the year. The trail from the entrance to the monkey mountain takes about 20 minutes, featuring a gentle slope after climbing 120 steps. The path is well-maintained, making it safe for young children to walk. You can leisurely enjoy a forest bath while heading towards the monkey mountain. From the rest area at an altitude of 160 meters, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Kyoto city. On clear days, you can even see the Kyoto Tower. At the summit, monkey feed is sold for 100 yen per pack. You can feed the monkeys in the rest area, but please do not feed them directly by hand; instead, place the food on the feeding rack. Additionally, please be aware that feeding monkeys outside the rest area is prohibited, and you cannot bring your own food to feed them. The mountaintop playground features a long slide, a horizontal bar, a seesaw, and swings, allowing not only children but also adults to join in the fun and enjoy a return to childhood with little ones. The monkeys at the Arashiyama Monkey Park are wild macaques, and reaching out to touch them like pets may provoke them. Particularly, staring into a monkey's eyes can be seen as a threatening gesture, so please be cautious. Monkeys do not like visitors taking close-up photos with cameras or smartphones, so please maintain a distance of over 2 meters when taking pictures. While you cannot touch the monkeys, you can observe their natural and primitive way of life.
