About Awaji Ningyōza (Awaji Puppet Theater)
The puppet theater, which began with Shinto rituals, spread throughout Japan from Awaji Island!
Details
Awaji Ningyo Joruri has a history of over 500 years. With elegant traditional Japanese music as the background, the performance features three people operating puppets. The vivid puppets depict the joys and sorrows of human drama, transporting the audience into a dreamlike world, making it a precious artistic skill passed down through generations in Japan.
At the Awaji Ningyo Theater, performances are held four times a day in a hall illuminated by large lanterns. Before the show starts, please use the translated audio guide to listen to the performance summary in advance. Knowing the storyline beforehand allows you to enjoy the show even if you don't understand Japanese. The venue also features a display of puppet structures, where you can learn how to manipulate the puppets and the details of puppet making.
