🗺️ Battlefield of the Plains戦場ヶ原
About Battlefield of the Plains
While enjoying hiking, you can also see a variety of alpine plants all at once.
Details
Located in "Nikkō National Park," this vast wetland covers an area of 400 hectares. Originally a lake, it was transformed by volcanic eruptions that caused sediment accumulation, allowing aquatic plants to grow and forming a muddy wetland in the cool climate. The name of the place comes from an ancient legend, which tells that Akagi Mountain and Nantai Mountain transformed into a giant centipede and a giant snake, respectively, and fought here over the territory of Chūzenji Lake, thus giving the area its name.
Surrounding the wetland is a nature exploration trail, a walking path that takes about 2 hours to complete. The trail is relatively flat, making it easy for beginners to enjoy hiking, attracting many families with children.
The area features three types of wetlands: high-level, low-level, and intermediate wetlands, making it a treasure trove of alpine plants. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery created by nature in any season. The most recommended seasons are June to July when the white-haired goat beard grass, known as the battlefield's synonym, changes color, and the autumn foliage season when the grass turns a beautiful red.
