About Bear Crossing Waterfall
A majestic waterfall filled with a sense of mystery.
Details
Located deep within the Shiretoko primeval forest, this giant waterfall has a height difference of 15 meters. The abundant water cascades down spectacularly, creating a breathtaking scene of splashing water. In ancient times, a hunter from Rausu chased a mother bear and her cub to this waterfall. To allow her cub to escape, the mother bear desperately pushed it up the waterfall, a moment that moved the hunter to stop shooting. This story is said to be the origin of the place name.
From the trailhead next to the Shiretoko Cross Road, it takes about 20 minutes one way to reach the waterfall. Along the path to the waterfall, towering trees such as water alders and bamboo cypress, each over 200 years old, stand tall on both sides. Visitors can fully appreciate the natural beauty of Shiretoko. The air is fresh, making it an excellent spot for enjoying a forest bath.
The "Shiretoko Rausu Visitor Center" provides a brochure with a simple route map (available in English), so be sure to stop by the visitor center before you set out. Don't forget to check the information on black bears when you pick up the brochure.
