About Buke Yashiki Ruins - Nomura Family Garden Viewing
The samurai residence is a time tunnel that takes you back to the era of the samurai.
Details
To this day, there remain stone-paved roads and earthen walls, preserving the strong historical atmosphere of the Nagamachi Samurai Residences, where the old homes of the Kaga Domain samurai are located. In one corner lies the Nomura family, the former residence of Nomura Denbe, a retainer of Maeda Toshiie, the founder of the Kaga Domain. The Nomura family once held the position of head of the horse escort group that protected the lord during his outings and also served in administrative roles, receiving a stipend of 1,200 koku, placing them in the middle class of samurai within the Kaga Domain.
The garden is cleverly arranged with various styles of lanterns and stone bridges, embodying the characteristics of a samurai garden. Additionally, the living space features the typical "shoin-zukuri" structure of a samurai residence. The tatami rooms are divided into different levels, with the higher-status rooms referred to as "jōdan no ma" and "ekken no ma." The seating arrangement also reflects the hierarchy, which is a characteristic of samurai residences. The interior of the mansion is filled with a tranquil atmosphere reminiscent of being in the mountains, making it hard to imagine its proximity to a bustling urban area, allowing one to feel as if they have traveled back in time to the era of the samurai.
In the second-floor tea room, visitors can enjoy matcha and wagashi (Japanese sweets). The Nomura family has been awarded 2 stars in the "Michelin Green Guide Japan," which evaluates domestic tourist attractions, and their garden was ranked third in the Japanese garden rankings by the American gardening magazine "The Journal of Japanese Gardening," receiving high praise.
