About Bunshōkan

It adopts a style reminiscent of the Renaissance era and still retains the luxurious and splendid architecture from the Taisho period.

Details

Bunshokan, officially named the "Yamagata Prefectural Local Museum," is a red brick building complex constructed in 1916 as the Yamagata Prefectural Office and Prefectural Assembly. The architecture is in the style of the British Modern Renaissance and reportedly cost 400,000 yen, which was 25% of the prefecture's total budget at the time. After the prefectural office moved to a new building in 1975, it was preserved as a cultural asset and was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1984. Since 1995, it has been open to the public as the Yamagata Prefectural Local Museum "Bunshokan" and has become a symbol representing Yamagata City. Not only does it have a grand and solemn exterior, but the luxurious and splendid interior is evident in details such as the central staircase and intricately crafted reliefs. The museum features exhibition rooms that introduce restoration records, the history of Yamagata, and local culture. The courtyard and the governor's office were also filming locations for the movie "Rurouni Kenshin," which garnered attention. Photography is allowed inside, and since events such as concerts or discussions may be held, please check the official website for opening information in advance.

Highlights

You can appreciate many retro buildings that represent the Taisho era. They have been designated as important cultural properties of the nation.
