About Byodoin Museum Hoshokan
Another "Hōnen-in" awakened under modern science.
Details
The World Heritage site "Byodoin" is famous for its magnificent "Phoenix Hall," which recreates the Pure Land paradise. The Byodoin Museum Hoshokan is located within its grounds. To blend into this designated historic and scenic garden landscape, most of the building is constructed underground. It cleverly captures natural light, and great care has been taken in the lighting design to create a dramatic space that feels completely unlike being underground.
Inside the museum, there are many extremely valuable cultural assets and temple treasures on display. These include the national treasures "Buddhist Bell," "26 Statues of Bodhisattvas in the Clouds," and a pair of "Phoenixes," as well as the important cultural property "Standing Statue of Eleven-Headed Kannon." Excavated items such as demon tiles from the Heian period, eaves tiles from the time of Byodoin's construction, and pottery are also not to be missed. Additionally, you can see computer graphics using the latest digital technology that restore the splendid colors of the interior of the Phoenix Hall.
Furthermore, the museum features Japan's largest glass wall, designed to enhance the spatial characteristics of the exhibits. In this memorable spatial experience, one can feel as if they are in another "Byodoin."
