About Chikuho Park
A castle site park that conveys the history and culture of Akita.
Details
Chuo Park was developed from the ruins of "Kubota Castle," the residence of the Satake clan of the Akita Domain. Covering an area of 16.29 hectares, it is a Japanese garden-style park that incorporates features of a castle, such as earthen mounds and moats. The existing "Gomotsukashira Obansho," along with the restored "Honmaru Osumi Yagura" and "Omote Mon," continue to quietly convey the atmosphere of the domain's governance era.
The park is home to a wide variety of plant species, with the cherry blossom festival being particularly famous for its 700 blooming cherry trees. Additionally, there are wisteria, azaleas, and lotus flowers, as well as popular autumn foliage viewing spots.
Chuo Park has a long history, having been designed in 1896 (Meiji 29) by Anpei Nagaoka, a pioneer of modern Japanese park design. The name "Chuo-en" was given by the Confucian scholar Yoshitomo Kano, combining "Aki" from Akita with "Sen," which means long-lasting, to create the name "Chuo-en."
The park also features the "Satake Historical Museum," "Akita City Central Library," and "Akita City Cultural Creation Hall," contributing to its cultural atmosphere. Additionally, there is the Akita cultural industry facility Matsushita, where one can see Akita maiko, and the "Akita Dog Exchange Center in Chuo Park," which is also located within the park.
