About Danguo Market
The market, overflowing with a vintage atmosphere, takes you on a journey through time.
Details
The "Tanga Market" is about a 10-minute walk from JR Kokura Station and serves as the kitchen for the citizens of Kitakyushu City in Fukuoka Prefecture. The entire market is filled with a retro atmosphere, reminiscent of the Showa era.
Along the 180-meter-long street, there are about 120 stalls selling not only fresh fish and vegetables but also prepared foods and processed products. Among them, there are shops selling the local specialty "Kome Nuka Nitsuke" (米糠醤煮魚), a dish made by adding rice bran to the broth and cooking it with sardines or mackerel for a sweet and savory flavor. Some shops use a century-old rice bran bed that has been passed down through generations, so it's worth a visit to taste it.
Additionally, located near the center of the market is "Daigakudo," a café primarily run by students from the University of Kitakyushu. They sell "Daigaku Don," which consists of a bowl filled only with steaming white rice. Diners can take the rice to the market stalls to purchase their favorite sashimi, meats, or Kome Nuka Nitsuke as toppings and enjoy a unique dining experience. The assembled rice bowls can be taken back to enjoy inside "Daigakudo."
Visitors to the market can also sample carefully selected beers, wines, and sake from various regions of Japan. A rare café and bar with its own craft beer brewing equipment is also quite popular.
