About Fish Shelf Shopping Street
From sashimi to Akashi-yaki, you can enjoy all the seafood of Akashi in a vibrant and energetic shopping street.
Details
The Uotana Shopping Street is located near "Akashi" Station in Hyogo Prefecture, showcasing a variety of fresh seafood in its arcade-style shops. During the end of the year and the beginning of the new year, the sight of flags indicating a bountiful catch is always crowded with shoppers and tourists.
The name "Uotana" comes from fishmongers who, to ensure the freshness of their catch, would display fresh fish on wooden boards and sprinkle water on them. Its history can be traced back to the early Edo period and is considered the predecessor of the fishing towns of Higashi Uo-machi and Nishi Uo-machi, which emerged during the construction of Akashi Castle and the regional planning by Miyamoto Musashi.
In this seafood market, you can buy octopus and the famous sea bream caught fresh from Akashi Fishing Port, as well as a variety of other seafood. Strolling around while looking at the offerings is a lot of fun, and many shops sell prepared foods like tempura right in front of their stalls, making it another joy to walk around and search for delicious treats.
When it comes to Akashi, the most famous dish is Akashi-yaki. Locally known as "Tamagoyaki," it is a type of octopus ball served with a dipping broth. There are many specialty shops for Akashi-yaki on Uotana Shopping Street. Of course, there are also several sushi restaurants, izakayas, and other dining establishments. It is a shopping street that continually attracts food lovers, making them reluctant to leave.
