About Five Color Pond
Lakes with various hues gather to form a mysterious cluster of wetlands.
Details
In the 21st year of the Meiji era (1888), a series of lakes and marshes were formed due to a steam explosion, resulting in hundreds of lakes. Among these lakes, about 30, including Bishamon-numa, Akai-numa, Shindai-numa, Taki-numa, and Benten-numa, are collectively known as the "Goshiki-numa Lake Group." In 2016, it received a one-star certification from the Michelin Green Guide.
Goshiki-numa does not refer to five lakes, but rather derives its name from the various changing colors presented by the lakes. It is said that these color differences are caused by the weather, seasons, and volcanic materials contained in the water.
The most notable feature is that each lake has its own distinct color, such as emerald green, cobalt blue, and turquoise blue, which is why it is also known as the "Mysterious Lakes." Among them, "Aoi-numa" emits a transcendent, dreamlike hue that is particularly worth seeing.
Goshiki-numa has a hiking trail called "Goshiki-numa Exploration Route," which is 4 kilometers long and takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes one way. It is recommended to take a walk while enjoying the scenic views of the lakes. Notably, at the largest lake, Bishamon-numa, you can also ride a paddle boat. In winter, you can walk using snowshoes when there is snow.
The landscape of the lakes changes with the seasons or time of day, and no matter how many times you visit, you can always see breathtaking views that feel refreshing.
