About Fukuyama Castle Museum

Understanding the history of Fukuyama Castle from "100 Famous Castles of Japan" also allows you to indirectly experience samurai culture!

Details

The historical museum located inside the "Fukuyama Castle" tenshu (keep) in front of Fukuyama Station in Hiroshima Prefecture. Fukuyama Castle was built in the 8th year of Genna (1622) by Mizuno Katsunari, a cousin of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and its magnificent appearance was selected as one of the "Japan's 100 Famous Castles." In 2022, it underwent renovations, restoring the only iron plate on the north side of the tenshu in Japan, and incorporating the latest imaging technology and interactive displays, creating a facility where visitors can enjoy learning about the history of Fukuyama Castle and the Fukuyama Domain. The museum is divided into six floors, and upon entering, visitors are greeted by a wall of images. It explains the background and structure of Fukuyama Castle in a simple and easy-to-understand manner, so first-time visitors need not worry. Each floor showcases precious exhibits such as weapons, armor, and historical materials related to the Mizuno and Abe clans, which will delight history enthusiasts. There are also several hands-on experience areas. The "Iban-gun Competition" utilizes a horse-riding simulator to recreate the scene of Mizuno Katsunari bravely fighting in the "Summer Campaign of Osaka" in the 20th year of Keichō (1615). The "Matchlock Gun Experience" allows visitors to hold replicas of matchlock guns and indirectly experience the techniques used by samurai of that era. From the observation deck on the top floor, one can enjoy a panoramic view of Fukuyama City, which is refreshing and pleasant.
