A small shopping street located near Heian Shrine and Okazaki Park. The retro arcade is adorned with about a thousand colorful pastel lanterns, creating a unique atmosphere that blends the old and the new. This place is also a popular photo spot on social media, attracting many tourists in addition to local residents.
The Wakasadaido, known since ancient times as the "Mackerel Road," has been delivering seafood ingredients to Kyoto. The Furukawacho shopping street is situated at the end of Wakasadaido on Sanjo Street, lined with numerous shops that developed alongside Nishiki Market. In the approximately 250-meter arcade, around 30 stores operate, including long-established shops selling daily necessities, cafes, izakayas, and craft shops, as well as galleries, showcasing a variety of charming businesses from both old and new industries. There are also several renovated townhouses that are quite popular among foreign tourists.
In spring, the "Lantern Festival," featuring handmade products, is held twice a year. Walking along the shopping street leads directly to Chion-in or Gion, and there's no need to worry about getting wet in the rain.
