About Ganso Shio Daifuku Mizuno (元祖塩大福 水野)

The famous shop that originated Sugamo's specialty, "Shio Daifuku" (salt-filled rice cakes).

Details

Located in the Sugamo Jizo-dori, the wagashi shop was established in Showa 12 (1937). Upholding the legacy of the previous generation to "create local specialties and revitalize the neighborhood," the "Shio Daifuku" was born in Showa 38 (1963) after continuous trials. As it evolved with the times, it gradually won over many fans and has now become a beloved specialty of Sugamo. In addition to using carefully selected domestic ingredients, the Shio Daifuku also insists on adjusting the salt content according to the seasons. The rice cake skin, made using a stone mortar rather than machinery, boasts a chewy texture that is its hallmark. With an elegant sweetness tinged with a hint of saltiness, this exquisite delicacy often appears at events in department stores. Specialty products sold in historically significant gardens such as Rikugien and the former Iwasaki residence include yokan made according to different seasons, which are highly praised each year. Besides Shio Daifuku, the shop also offers regular items such as soy sauce dango, monaka, dorayaki, as well as seasonal limited items like sakura mochi, warabi mochi, mizu yokan, and fruit daifuku made with seasonal fruits. The variety of products is quite rich and makes for perfect offerings for shrine visits.
