🌸 About This Restaurant

The famous shop that originated Sugamo's specialty, "Shio Daifuku" (salt-filled rice cakes).

📜 Restaurant Details

Located in the Zoshigaya area of Tokyo, this traditional Japanese confectionery shop was founded in Showa 12 (1937). Upholding the legacy of the previous generation, which emphasized "creating local specialties and revitalizing the neighborhood," the shop successfully developed its signature "Shio Daifuku" (salted rice cake) in Showa 38 (1963) through continuous experimentation. As it has evolved with the changing times, it has gradually won the hearts of many, becoming a beloved local specialty in Zoshigaya. In addition to using carefully selected domestic ingredients, Shio Daifuku also adjusts the salt content according to the seasons. The mochi skin is made by hand using a stone mortar rather than machines, resulting in a uniquely chewy texture. This delicacy boasts a refined sweetness complemented by a hint of saltiness, often appearing at department stores during special events. The shop also sells seasonal yokan (sweet bean jelly) that is made in accordance with different seasons at historic gardens such as the famous Riku-yen and the former Iwasaki residence garden, receiving high praise every year. Apart from Shio Daifuku, a variety of consistently available products are offered, including soy sauce rice dumplings (dango), monaka, dorayaki, as well as seasonal limited items such as sakura mochi, warabi mochi, and fruit daifuku made with seasonal fruits. The wide range of products makes them perfect for offering as local souvenirs when visiting shrines.
