About Gero Onsen Gassho Village
An outdoor museum composed of Gassho-style houses, recreating the landscape of ancient Japanese mountain villages.
Details
Gero Onsen Gassho Village is a recommended sightseeing spot to visit alongside Gero Onsen. It is an outdoor museum featuring precious Gassho-style houses that have been relocated from World Heritage sites like Shirakawa-go. The village is composed of two areas: "Gassho Village," which showcases ancient lifestyles, and "Seasonal Forest," where seasonal flowers and wild mountain plants thrive.
In "Gassho Village," a cluster of ten Gassho-style houses, including the nationally designated Important Cultural Property "Old Oka Family Residence," has been recreated. The folk museum, which displays agricultural tools and everyday items, is the "Old Iwasaki House," registered as a national tangible cultural property. There are also workshops offering pottery experiences and washi paper-making experiences; the "Enku Museum," which collects Enku Buddha statues; and the "Hida Takayama Shrine," dedicated to the god of cooking, along with foot baths and dining establishments in Gero Onsen.
If you want to enjoy a leisurely time in nature, you can stroll through the "Seasonal Forest." Walking in the forest allows you to experience the beauty of spring cherry blossoms, summer greenery, and autumn maple leaves. The 175-meter-long roller slide, an old-style teahouse, and the "Frog Shrine," dedicated to the frog deity, are also worth a visit.
Highlights
Ten gassho-zukuri houses relocated from Shirakawa-go recreate the village from that time. The largest gassho-zukuri house in the village, the "Old Oda Family Residence," is a must-see attraction, and the interior is open for visits. There are also various facilities such as a folklore museum, experience workshop, tea house, and foot bath that utilize the gassho-zukuri houses. Walking in the "Seasonal Chronicle Forest" and the thrilling slide are also highly recommended.
