About Gero Onsen Museum
Introducing the charm of hot springs from both scientific and cultural perspectives in a museum.
Details
The museum, which provides an in-depth introduction to the comprehensive knowledge of hot springs from both scientific and cultural perspectives, is quite rare in Japan. Built with local timber on a high platform, the structure's white-walled warehouse appearance fits the atmosphere of "Gero Onsen Town."
In the "Hot Spring Science Zone," the principles of hot spring emergence, as well as the various mineral qualities and effects of different hot springs, are introduced. Visitors can also view a variety of beautiful minerals contained in the hot springs. In the "Hot Spring Culture" area, historical materials related to hot springs are displayed, allowing tourists to gain a deeper understanding of the evolving hot spring culture in Japan over time. There is also an exhibition area that collects historical and characteristic information about Gero Onsen.
Inside the museum, there are foot baths and walking baths using Gero Onsen water, which can be accessed with an entrance ticket. The foot baths have different temperatures depending on the soaking location, and the stone-paved walking bath stimulates the pressure points on the soles of the feet, making it perfect for relaxation during travel breaks. Additionally, the attached souvenir shop sells unique items such as "Onsen Notebook," which records information about the hot springs one has visited, and magnets shaped like hot spring buns.
