About Goraba Garden

An outdoor museum that retains the style of the colonial era.

Details

Preserving the outdoor museum of the foreign settlement in Nagasaki, where merchants arrived over 160 years ago across the ocean. Located on a hillside overlooking Nagasaki Port, the park features many highlights worth seeing. The most notable is the "Old Glover Residence," where Thomas Blake Glover, who made significant contributions to Japan's modernization, once lived. This precious building has been registered as a "World Heritage Site." Built in 1863, it is the oldest existing wooden Western-style building in Japan, characterized by its unique bungalow-style design. Other must-see buildings include the "Old Ringoe Residence," which retains the representative appearance of the settlement's architecture from the early Meiji period, and the "Old Alt Residence," which features a row of stone columns and is the largest Western-style residence from the same period. In addition to the buildings, there are many interesting attractions throughout the park. These include a shared water faucet from the Meiji era, Japan's earliest existing asphalt road, and a romantic legend that says if you find a heart-shaped stone buried in the park's pathways, your love wishes will come true.

Highlights

An outdoor museum that preserves the residence of merchants who came to Nagasaki. It features nine traditional buildings, including important cultural properties, which are definitely worth seeing. The romantic legend of the heart-shaped stone is particularly charming.
