About Gunma Prefectural Museum of Modern Art
The museum located in the forest primarily collects modern and contemporary art works from Japan and abroad.
Details
Opened in October 1974, it is located in Gunma no Mori Park, which covers an area of 260,000 square meters and is densely populated with about 5,000 trees. It is adjacent to the Gunma Prefectural Museum of History, allowing visitors to enjoy the pleasure of museum tours.
The collection consists of approximately 2,100 works. The categories of the collection are diverse, including modern Western art from artists such as Renoir, Monet, and Picasso, as well as modern and contemporary Japanese art, works by artists related to Gunma Prefecture, and the "Tobokuan Inoue Collection," which focuses on ancient Japanese and Chinese art. In addition to the permanent collection, there are four themed exhibitions held each year. Among them is a tapestry (woven fabric) that nearly reproduces Picasso's famous work "Guernica," of which only three exist globally, and it is open to the public only once a year. Additionally, there are lectures by invited external speakers, guided explanations of artworks led by curators, and art programs specifically for children.
The museum's design is by Arata Isozaki, known for his geometric designs. The building features square structures in its walls, marble floors, and glass exteriors, and it remains timeless even after 50 years since its opening.
