About Hakobonkan "Konya"

In the small town famous for indigo dyeing and goldfish, you can experience the local culture through observation and hands-on interaction.

Details

Standing in the historic district of Yamato-Koriyama in Nara Prefecture, known for its indigo dyeing and goldfish, is a complex facility. It has been renovated to restore the old storefront of the Okuno family, which has been engaged in indigo dyeing since the Edo period, and now displays information and books about indigo dyeing. The name "Konya," which refers to a business that operates indigo dyeing, is also the name of the facility. Inside, various tools such as dye vats, brushes, and paper samples that were actually used in the Konya are displayed, allowing visitors to closely experience the life of artisans from the past. Just visiting is worthwhile, but if given the opportunity, it is also recommended to gain a deeper understanding of the indigo dyeing process through hands-on experience. The indigo dye made from naturally fermented alkaline liquid can be easily experienced by anyone. Using common items like clothespins or rubber bands to create patterns, even elementary school students can participate with ease. Additionally, in one corner of the facility, there is an exhibition area dedicated to goldfish-related collectibles. It features around 1,000 items related to goldfish, including crafts and household goods, collected by local researchers, making it a must-see. The facility also includes a self-service café and a goldfish tank display area, transforming the space into a relaxing spot for visitors to rest during their strolls.

Highlights

Through a relaxed indigo dyeing experience, revisit the process of indigo dyeing. Don't miss the collection of about 1,000 goldfish artifacts. The charm of the space, renovated from an old street shop from the Edo period, is quite appealing. The newly established self-service café and goldfish tank display area provide a space to rest and relax during your stroll.
