About Hakodate Kōsetsuen (Miharashi Park)
Named "The Garden of Plum Blossoms Fragrant in the Cold Snow," it is the only garden in Hokkaido designated as a national cultural property.
Details
Hakodate Kōsetsuen is a Japanese garden located within the Mihara Park in Hakodate City. Originally built as a villa by a wealthy merchant during the Meiji era to establish a base in Hakodate, the name Kōsetsuen is said to have been chosen by the head of the Jōdo Shinshū temple "Chion-in," who came to Hakodate during the Taisho period, meaning "the garden where the fragrance of plum blossoms drifts in the cold snow."
After the early Showa period, it was opened for free public visits. In 2001, it was designated as a scenic spot, becoming the only nationally designated cultural property garden in Hokkaido. Within the vibrant and spacious garden, there are several noteworthy attractions, including a shoin-style pavilion, streams, and a greenhouse built of red bricks.
Surrounding the grassy plaza are Somei Yoshino cherry trees, which attract a large number of flower-viewing visitors in spring. In summer, the clear streams are home to fireflies, creating a dreamlike landscape. In autumn, the maple leaves turn shades of red and yellow, making it a popular spot for viewing autumn foliage. During the peak of the fall colors, nighttime illumination events are held, offering a captivating view that is distinctly different from the daytime scenery.
If you feel tired from walking, you might want to take a break at the "Green Center." Here, you can borrow books related to the garden, and there is also a thoughtful service providing free wireless internet.
