About Hakuchozuka Kofun (White Swan Mound)
The oldest and third largest keyhole-shaped burial mound in Aichi Prefecture.
Details
The Shiratori-zuka Kofun is one of the ancient tombs designated as a national historic site in the "Shidami Kofun Group," located on the easternmost side of Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. Built in the early 4th century on the edge of the Shonai River terrace, it is the oldest keyhole-shaped tomb in the area. The tomb is approximately 115 meters long, with a circular rear part that has a diameter of about 75 meters and a front part that is about 43 meters long, making it the third largest keyhole-shaped tomb in the prefecture.
The top and sloping sides of the rear circular mound are constructed with quartzite, giving it a dazzling white appearance, which is referred to as "Shiratori-zuka." Local legends also speak of a white bird; it is said that when the ancient hero Yamato Takeru was wounded by a snake while defeating the rebel at Mount Ibuki, a white bird appeared to help him heal his wounds. With the assistance of the white bird, he arrived in the area and buried the white bird that sacrificed its life for him here.
The area has been developed into "Historical Village - Shidami Kofun Group," and there are guiding facilities such as the "Experiential! Shidami Kofun Group Museum SHIDAMU."
