About Hamarikyu Gardens (浜離宮恩賜庭園)
A Japanese garden beloved by generations of shoguns since the Edo period.
Details
Hama-Rikyu Gardens, known as "Hama Goten" during the Edo period, served as a villa for the shoguns of the Tokugawa shogunate and later became a detached palace for the Japanese imperial family. In 1945, it was designated as a Tokyo metropolitan garden and opened to the public.
The garden features a unique "Shioiri no Ike" (tide pond), where seawater is introduced into the pond. The scenery of the pond changes with the ebb and flow of the tides, making it a rare sight. In the center of the pond, there is a tea house where visitors can enjoy matcha while admiring the view.
Hama-Rikyu Gardens is also renowned for its flowers. The garden has approximately 82 cherry blossom trees, including Somei Yoshino and yaezakura, which bloom spectacularly together in spring. Additionally, from late February to late March each year, around 300,000 rape blossoms bloom, creating a stunning display.
Hama-Rikyu Gardens is listed as a national special scenic spot and special historic site. It is one of only two locations in Tokyo that holds both distinctions, along with Koishikawa Kōrakuen.
